Pilgrimage of São João D'Arga

Pilgrimage of São João D'Arga It is one of the oldest and most traditional pilgrimages in Alto Minho, and takes place every year on the 28th of August, in Caminha.

Faith in São João Baptista leads hundreds of pilgrims to climb to the Monastery that was built in Serra D’Arga.

Once there, they go around the chapel three times and, in keeping with tradition, give an alms to the saint and another to the devil.

The pilgrims, coming from various parts of the region and neighboring Spain, spend the night in the area surrounding the Monastery.

During the afternoon and evening of the 28th, there is no shortage of songs to challenge, the despique of philharmonic bands, dances to the sound of concertinas, good snacks and the indispensable brandy with honey
